IT'S A SMALL WORLD

Gallery Nucleus is hosting an exhibit for the release of Joey Chou's children's book. The book pays homage to It's A Small World. He was kind enough to ask me to do a piece for the show. The opening reception is this Saturday September 17th 7pm-10pm.

ParaNorman officially announced!

Laika just announced the release of their next movie. It's called ParaNorman and comes out August 17, 2012. I had the pleasure of doing environmental conceptual designs on the film for the past year. This particular illustration was a collaboration between Chris Turnham and myself. It's a fantastic story. I can't wait to see the film next year! Read more

My friend, Chris Mitchell, just opened a shop/gallery called Q Pop in historic Little Tokyo area of Los Angeles.  This is my contribution for the grand opening show. The theme of the show was “What is Q Pop.” To me, Q Pop is Los Angeles.

The Story of Walls

I am honored to share that the short I directed called “The Story of Walls” has been nominated for an Annie Award! For the past year and half I had been working with a team to build Badmash Animation Studios from the ground up. The studio was based out of LA, San Francisco and India. I had the amazing opportunity to travel to India for two months and direct this film.

“The Story of Walls” is an absurdist history of trade protectionism. Throughout history, our world has allowed simple misunderstandings, greed, and an all-consuming love of nachos to divide us. To succeed as a people, we must understand that our individual success is based on our collective success. More importantly, we must also understand that there are enough nachos for everyone!

Directed By: Pete Oswald

Storyboard Artist: Andy Suriano
Art Director: Pete Oswald
Background Layout: Chris Reccardi

Animation Director: Noor Mohammed

We can’t post the film to the web because we are in the process of submitting it to film festivals. So here are some stills. Congrats to everyone who made this possible!

Go See Cloudy!

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs opens today. I saw it earlier this week and was blown away. I am always impressed when I can see the filmmaker’s thumbprint on the final picture.

In designing the characters, we envisioned the simplicity of Miroslav Sasek’s illustrations combined with the charm of the Muppets. We were constantly trying to simplify our shapes, and exaggerate the expression. The animators on the film did an amazing job of maintaining this style throughout the film. Here are some character designs.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs premieres on September 18th! The film is adapted from the children’s book written by Judi Barrett. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Clone High) are the co-directors and co-writers. Justin Thompson, Production Designer, compiled an amazing visual development team. Carey Yost, Mark Colangelo, and myself were responsible for the final character designs. I am honored to be part of this film. Go see it!

Here are some posters I designed for Flint’s bedroom. I will post some character designs when the film opens.

The Art and Making of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is now available. Special thanks to Tracy Miller-Zarneke.

Doubtsourcing

I've been helping some friends start an animation studio in Pune, India. We are beginning to pitch our first production, Doubtsourcing. It’s a 2D animated sitcom about global collaboration, or the lack thereof, centered on a dysfunctional IT company in Bangalore, India. Even though most of the characters are Indian, the show is written for Americans. I've had a blast working with the talented crew. Check out the site http://www.badmash.tv/.

About two years ago I had the opportunity to work on Madagascar 2 as a character designer. The amazing Dreamworks/PDI art department was led by, production designer, Kendal Cronkhite. I had the honor to work closely with character designers Craig Kellman and Andy Bialk. Congrats to the entire crew!

The film premieres this Friday, November 7. Go check it out! Also, The Art of Madagascar book by Jerry Beck is now available. The book is full of beautiful artwork. I highly recommend it.
